How Camp Wizard Helps Players Understand Recruiting

Start by Finding The Right Type of College For YOU

The First Step in the process is to understand why type of College you are looking for.

Your Answer is centered around the answer to these 4 questions:

  Location?
Where are you willing to go to play college baseball?  Common answers are; In State/Close to home, Somewhere warm, East or West of the Mississippi, I have family in  (State), I’d like to play there, or everyone in my family goes to (Particular College).

What College Level Can You PLAY at?You want to go to a program where you will get a chance to PLAY, not just get a jersey and a  spot on the bench.  Even if you have  to start on the “Dev” team – you need to PLAY to get better!

Degree – What do you want to study?
If you have a specific degree you want to study, make sure the college offers that program.  A specific degree also eliminates a lot of schools from your list of target schools.

What Does the Scholarship / money need to look like?
Is your family blessed enough to let you go where you want to without regard to the financials?  Understand the costs to actually attend colleges of your choosing.  Do you need a full scholarship to make this work for you?  Whatever your situation is, understand it.  This has a major impact on your selection /marketing process.

Below are some factors that might not be immediately in focus as you look for a college to play for.

Understand the new NCAA rules on eligibility and how Jucos don’t burn eligibility
Where does a college get it’s recruits?  Do they recruit out of HS or focus on Transfers
Who is currently on their roster? Do they have a need at your primary position?
What type of city is this college located in?  Are you a “City” person? Is the school in a city setting?  Religion often plays a part in this?  What do you like to do in your personal time?  Can you find that around any particular school?

What do players say about playing with this coach or coaching staff?

Dig into as many of these questions as you can as you get serious about any college program.

Your Online Profile - Is it ready?

What does your online pofile say about you to a college coach?

What is in your profile?  These are key components that should be in your profile.

  Basic Profile Information
Name, HS Grad Year, GPA, positions you play, some stats, videos and possibly some evaluation from a coach or a college coach.

Where is your profile(s) hung at?
There are many profile sources for players.  Make sure you have 1 or more than one that you update regularly.  We recommend Fieldlevel or Camp Wizard profiles.  This way you can control the information better and keep it up to date.

  Video of you playing

You need to have video online of you playing.  College coaches need to SEE what you look like.  Just a few swings/hits or a few pitches give college coaches an idea as to what you look like on the field.

  Independent Profiles

There are a few scouting event companies that you should attempt to get a profile with.  Perfect Game, PBR and 5-Tool are some of these companies that will post player profiles from playing in their events.

College Coaches will  always search  YOU on the internet.  Your job is to present information you want them to see

College Coaches will look for:

Can they find you in multiple places on the net.  This tells them you are experienced.
Short videos (don’t have to be overproduced) of you doing baseball things.
Clean up your social media.  You want to present a classy look.
Camp evaluations or Coaches write ups are great things to present.

Configure your playing schedule to produce as many of these items as you can.  If you live rural / small town, our Fill In Player options might be your best chance to build your resume.  Get yourself in some big events!

What College Coaches are Looking for in Players

College Coaches get inundated with players wanting their attention.  Make sure you stand out from the rest.  Why should they recruit YOU?

Here are some things coaches are looking for :

Physical Tools/Skills
Coaches want results, athletes & potential.   Have you proven yourself at the HS or Juco level? Can you be counted on to produce.  Are you a diamond in the rough?  Could their coaching mold your skills into something special.  They might assume the coaches you have had to this point aren’t as good at getting the most out of you – but they think they can.

Work Ethic / Commitment / Drive / Competitiveness
You’ve worked hard to get to this point.  Now, it only gets more difficult as you will be entering college ball at the bottom of the food chain again.  Do you have the commitment to climb the ladder again.  Will you do what it takes?

Are you going to do the work in the classroom and on the team?
If they commit to you, will you commit to them?  Are you a rebel or difficult?  Will you be a problem or not get the grades to stay eligible?  Will you be a problem for them?  They want players that they won’t have to waste time on.  Show them that.

  See you play in person
In over 90% of all cases, you will NOT get an offer until they see you play in person and meet you.  These means you have to get in front of college coaches.  Go to Camps.  Put your name and skills out there.  Find the right camps to attend.

Prospect Camps are a great way to meet college coaches.

Things to keep in mind as you find prospect/recruiting opportuntites:

Prospect Camps are GREAT – ONLY if the right type of coaches are at the events you go to
Follow your own target school definition that you have established for yourself.  Find those coaches.
Marketing your profile to schools/coaches that fit your target school definition is invaluable.
Take the feedback you get from college coaches to heart.  Feedback from a parent or a team coach is never as valuable as that from a college coaches.  They are never motivated to lie to you…

Finding appropriate Prospect Camps is a great way to go.

The Truth About College Baseball Camps

Not All Players Should Attend D1 Camps

Only 15% of college baseball players compete at D1 programs. Yet when you search for “college baseball camps,” you almost always see D1 results.

Here’s the problem:

  • D1 camps are expensive (often $300-$500+)
  • If you’re not D1 material, you’ll get zero attention from coaches
  • You’ll waste hundreds of dollars for no recruiting benefit
  • Limited feedback because coaches focus on true D1 prospects

Ask yourself honestly:

  • Can you throw 88+ mph consistently?
  • Are you a .400+ hitter against elite competition?
  • Do you have D1 size, speed, and tools?

If the answer is “not yet”, attending D1 camps may do more harm than good.

The right fit matters more than the biggest name.

JUCO & NAIA: The Hidden Opportunity

Over 50% of college baseball players compete at JUCO or NAIA programs.

These schools offer:

  Full athletic scholarships (NAIA)
Unlike D3, NAIA schools can offer full rides

  Great coaching and facilities
Many JUCO and NAIA programs rival D2 competition

  Pathways to D1 transfers (JUCO)
Hundreds of D1 rosters include JUCO transfers

  More playing time for development
Smaller rosters mean you’re not riding the bench

  Affordable education
JUCO tuition is 50-70% cheaper than 4-year universities

  Academic fresh start
JUCO gives you a chance to improve grades and meet NCAA eligibility

The problem?

JUCO and NAIA camps are virtually impossible to find online. Major camp listing sites don’t include them because they focus on big-name D1 programs that drive traffic.

College Camp Wizard is Different

We’re the ONLY database that specializes in JUCO and NAIA camps nationwide. We include every level because we believe every player deserves to find the right fit.

  Free or low-cost tournament entry
Most opportunities are free or $50-100

  Exposure at high-level events
Play in showcases you couldn’t afford alone

  More at-bats and innings
Game reps accelerate development

Networking with other players and coaches
Build relationships across teams

  Try before you commit
Test different teams before joining full-time

Insider Secret

Some players in our network use the fill-in strategy to play 10-15 extra tournaments per year – often at zero cost. They attend Perfect Game showcases, PBR events, and college prospect tournaments without paying thousands in team fees.

Smart players maximize exposure while minimizing costs.

College Recruiting Timeline

When Should You Attend College Baseball Camps?

Freshmen & Sophomores

Focus: Develop skills and build your baseball resume

Actions to take:

  • Focus on development camps at local colleges
  • Build relationships with college programs early
  • Attend 1-2 camps per year to learn what college baseball looks like
  • Play for a competitive travel team
  • Start a basic highlight video
  • Focus on grades (GPA matters for eligibility)
Camp strategy: Don’t stress about recruiting yet. Use camps to develop skills, get feedback from college coaches, and understand the level of play.

Juniors - CRITICAL YEAR

Focus: This is your most important recruiting year

Actions to take:

  • Attend 3-5 prospect camps (spring/summer)
  • Target programs at your skill level (be realistic)
  • Email coaches BEFORE attending camps to express interest
  • Play in showcase tournaments (Perfect Game, PBR, etc.)
  • Update highlight video with game footage
  • Take SAT/ACT (eligibility requirement)
  • Schedule unofficial visits to top schools

Camp strategy: Be strategic. Coaches are more likely to watch players who’ve made contact first. Focus on camps where you realistically fit the roster.

Seniors

Focus: Commit to a school OR pivot to JUCO/prep school

Actions to take:

  • Attend camps only at schools actively recruiting you
  • If no offers yet, attend fall JUCO/NAIA camps
  • Consider prep school or gap year programs
  • Stay in touch with coaches who showed interest
  • Finalize commitment (early signing period: November)

Camp strategy: If you’re uncommitted by fall, focus on JUCO camps. JUCO is a proven pathway to D1/D2 programs later. Many MLB players took this route.

Frequently Asked Questions for Players

How do I know which camps to attend?

Focus on camps where you realistically fit the roster.

If you’re a 2.8 GPA student throwing 78 mph, target JUCO and NAIA programs – not D1 powerhouses.

Use our filters to find camps that match your:

  • Academic profile (GPA, test scores)
  • Athletic profile (position, velocity, exit velo)
  • Geographic preferences
  • Budget constraints

Be honest about your skill level. Coaches will respect you more for attending the right camps than wasting their time at camps where you don’t fit.

Most players should start attending prospect camps during their junior year (spring/summer).

Freshmen and sophomores should focus on:

  • Development camps to build skills
  • Local college camps to learn what college baseball looks like
  • Building relationships with programs (even if they can’t recruit you yet)

Juniors should attend:

  • 3-5 prospect camps at target schools
  • Showcase events (Perfect Game, PBR)

Seniors should only attend camps at schools actively recruiting them.

Many are!

Teams often just need another body to complete their tournament roster. They’re not looking to make money – they need a player.

Some teams may ask for a small fee ($50-100) to cover:

  • Team uniform rental
  • Tournament entry fees
  • Travel costs (gas, hotels)

But even when there’s a cost, it’s far cheaper than joining a full-time travel team that charges $2,000-$5,000 per season.

Pro tip: The more flexible you are (multiple positions, available on short notice), the more free opportunities you’ll find.

Yes! In fact, you should.

NCAA rules allow you to contact coaches at any time (though they may have restrictions on when they can respond).

Our coach contact database gives you verified email addresses and phone numbers for:

  • Head coaches
  • Recruiting coordinators
  • Assistant coaches

We recommend:

  1. Email coaches 2-4 weeks BEFORE attending their camps
  2. Include your grad year, position, stats, and highlight video link
  3. Express genuine interest in their program
  4. Ask if they’ll be evaluating your age group at the camp

Coaches are more likely to watch players who’ve made contact first.

[Included with annual membership: Email templates you can copy/paste]

That’s completely normal – and exactly why our database exists.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Search camps across ALL divisions – Don’t limit yourself yet
  2. Attend a mix of camps – D2, D3, JUCO, NAIA (avoid expensive D1 camps initially)
  3. Get honest feedback – Ask coaches at camps where they think you fit
  4. Compare rosters – Look up current rosters at programs you like (height, weight, stats)
  5. Be realistic about academics – Your GPA and test scores may narrow options

Remember: 85% of college baseball players are NOT at D1 programs.

There are amazing opportunities at D2, D3, JUCO, and NAIA schools – and our database helps you find them.

Camp costs vary widely:

  • D1 prospect camps: $300-$500+ (often just 1 day)
  • D2/D3 prospect camps: $200-$350
  • JUCO camps: $50-$150 (best value!)
  • NAIA camps: $100-$250
  • Development camps: $150-$300 (usually multi-day)

Our database shows pricing for every camp so you can budget accordingly.

Money-saving tip: JUCO camps offer the best value. They’re cheaper, you’ll get more attention, and JUCO is a proven pathway to D1/D2 programs later.

Prospect Camps:

  • Hosted by ONE college program
  • Coaches evaluate you for THEIR roster
  • Smaller setting (20-50 players)
  • More personal interaction with coaches
  • Best for: Players serious about that specific school

Showcase Camps:

  • Multiple college coaches attend
  • You’re being evaluated by 10-50+ schools at once
  • Larger setting (100-300 players)
  • Less personal interaction
  • Best for: Players who want exposure to many programs at once

Our database labels each camp type so you know what to expect.
