Let’s discuss:
Start by Finding The Right Type of College For YOU
The First Step in the process is to understand why type of College you are looking for.
Your Answer is centered around the answer to these 4 questions:
✓ Location?
Where are you willing to go to play college baseball? Common answers are; In State/Close to home, Somewhere warm, East or West of the Mississippi, I have family in (State), I’d like to play there, or everyone in my family goes to (Particular College).
✓ What College Level Can You PLAY at?You want to go to a program where you will get a chance to PLAY, not just get a jersey and a spot on the bench. Even if you have to start on the “Dev” team – you need to PLAY to get better!
✓ Degree – What do you want to study?
If you have a specific degree you want to study, make sure the college offers that program. A specific degree also eliminates a lot of schools from your list of target schools.
✓ What Does the Scholarship / money need to look like?
Is your family blessed enough to let you go where you want to without regard to the financials? Understand the costs to actually attend colleges of your choosing. Do you need a full scholarship to make this work for you? Whatever your situation is, understand it. This has a major impact on your selection /marketing process.
Your Online Profile – Is it ready?
What does your online pofile say about you to a college coach?
What is in your profile? These are key components that should be in your profile.
✓ Basic Profile Information
Name, HS Grad Year, GPA, positions you play, some stats, videos and possibly some evaluation from a coach or a college coach.
✓ Where is your profile(s) hung at?
There are many profile sources for players. Make sure you have 1 or more than one that you update regularly. We recommend Fieldlevel or Camp Wizard profiles. This way you can control the information better and keep it up to date.
✓ Video of you playing
You need to have video online of you playing. College coaches need to SEE what you look like. Just a few swings/hits or a few pitches give college coaches an idea as to what you look like on the field.
✓ Independent Profiles
There are a few scouting event companies that you should attempt to get a profile with. Perfect Game, PBR and 5-Tool are some of these companies that will post player profiles from playing in their events.
What College Coaches are Looking for in Players
College Coaches get inundated with players wanting their attention. Make sure you stand out from the rest. Why should they recruit YOU?
Here are some things coaches are looking for :
✓ Physical Tools/Skills
Coaches want results, athletes & potential. Have you proven yourself at the HS or Juco level? Can you be counted on to produce. Are you a diamond in the rough? Could their coaching mold your skills into something special. They might assume the coaches you have had to this point aren’t as good at getting the most out of you – but they think they can.
✓ Work Ethic / Commitment / Drive / Competitiveness
You’ve worked hard to get to this point. Now, it only gets more difficult as you will be entering college ball at the bottom of the food chain again. Do you have the commitment to climb the ladder again. Will you do what it takes?
✓ Are you going to do the work in the classroom and on the team?
If they commit to you, will you commit to them? Are you a rebel or difficult? Will you be a problem or not get the grades to stay eligible? Will you be a problem for them? They want players that they won’t have to waste time on. Show them that.
✓ See you play in person
In over 90% of all cases, you will NOT get an offer until they see you play in person and meet you. These means you have to get in front of college coaches. Go to Camps. Put your name and skills out there. Find the right camps to attend.
